Major Surprises in India Asia Cup 2025 Squad

Here Ajit Agarkar and Suryakumar Yadav, the biggest discussion points of the press conference, where he qualified for the fifteen-member Asia Cup squad, were unveiled.

As expected, there were many talking points at the press conference, which lasted about twenty minutes. Agarkar and Suryakumar were questioned on the non-selection of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer, and both did not avoid any tough questions.

Apart from unveiling the fifteen-member squad, Agarkar also announced five standby players for the tournament. Yashavi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, Rinku Singh, Prasidh Krishna, and Washington Sundar are included in the five-man reserve list.

So, without any further delay, let’s get down to work and discuss the five biggest talking points from Ajit Agarkar and Suryakumar Yadav’s press conference.

Shubman Gill returns as vice-captain

Gill last played T20 against Sri Lanka in July 2025, where the twenty-five-year-old served as the vice-captain of the team. Keeping this continuity in mind, Suryakumar Yadav revealed that the management decided to bring back Gill in place of Axar Patel from the England T20s.

Shubman Gill last played T20 for India; when we went to Sri Lanka that time, I was leading, and he was the vice-captain. From here we started a new cycle for the T20 World Cup. After this he became busty in all the test series. Surya Kumar Yadav told reporters he is in the team, and we are glad to have him.

Absence of Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal

Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal are both fired from their respective franchises on the Indian stage in the premier league (IPL) 2025 season. However, they have not received the T20 call back yet. Speaking to reporters, Agrkar said that it was unfortunate that both of them had to miss out, but nothing was done considering the current strength of the team can be saved.

Agarkar said about Shreyas, “With regard to Shreyas, I mean, you have to tell him who he can replace. Neither is it his fault, nor is it ours. It’s just that we have to pick the fifteen at the moment; he has to wait for his chance.

Talking about Jaiswal, Agrakar said, “With regard to Yashavi, it is again unlucky. There is Abhishek Sharma, and what he has done in the last few months or the year that he has been with the team. Also, he can bowl a bit, giving us options when required by the captain. One of these guys will always be missed. It is unfortunate that Yashasvi may have to wait for his opportunity.

Sanju Samson could miss out

Under the press conference, Agarkar candidly admitted that Sanju Samson got an opportunity as an opener only because Gill and Jaiswal were not present for the T20 due to their commitments in the tests. Keeping this statement in mind, it can be concluded that the right-handed batsman is not a sure-fire starter in the playing eleven for the Asia Cup.

“Sanju was playing because at that time Shubman and Yashasvi were not present there. Abhishek was also like this. I mean, Abhishek’s performance obviously makes it difficult to take him out. Also, his bowling is useful,” Agarkar said.

Jasprit Bumrah’s Workload

Jasprit Bumrah, due to workload management, and Anderson-Tendulkar, against England, played three out of five tests in the Trophy. Ever since the series ended, the fast bowler has faced criticism from some corners for his pick and choose. Amidst all this drama, Bumrah has declared himself available for the Asia Cup starting on nine September.

Again, Agarkar clarified that Bumrah’s workload management will continue in spite of the outside noise, as the fast bowler really is.

I mean, I don’t think that there is any written plan this time. Obviously, we have received a good break after the England series. The team management, physio, or any concerned people are always in touch. It’s just now. Before his injury, we had taken care of him heartily. Because we know how honorable and valuable he is. We always want him to be present for all the big games. It is directed by Ajit Agarkar.

“But there are World Cups, Champion Trophies, or big series like England or Australia, where you want him to be present everywhere. So most of the outlooks are always on the fast bowlers. And yes, because he has been injured for the last three years. So we keep extra care of this matter that is surprising and special. And it will not be changed. Even if the series may be six months. As we move forward, when we need him, he is there. So how does he feel about the team? That is probably the most important thing,” he said.

Fifteen members of the Indian team have been revealed for the upcoming men’s Asia Cup. Selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar and T20 captain Surya Kumar Yadav addressed the media and presented the team to the world. Ghubman Gill as vice-captain in T20 returned, while players like Tilak Verma and Rinku Singh retained their places. Jasprit Bumrah has made himself available for an eight-team tournament; thus, his role as a fast bowler was confirmed.

Can Shubman Gill become India’s all-three-format captain ?

Test captain Gill has returned as vice-captain in T20. The change has led to an obligation to whether Gill could lastly be a captain in all three formats of the game. At present, Rohit Sharma is the ODI captain, but his future in this format is unclear.

When Agarkar was asked whether Gill has the ability to become captain of all formats, he avoided the question.

Agarkar said, “I can discuss T20 cricket and Test cricket with you right now; he is already leading. And as Surya mentioned, the last time he played T20 cricket for India, he was the vice-captain. So we clearly see some leadership qualities in him. And his form in England was exactly what we were expecting. With the form he showed with his back, he clearly exceeded all our expectations.”

When you have so much pressure as a captain, it’s a good sign. So, as I said, I can only talk about T20 cricket and Test cricket right now,” he said.
